New from FableVision! SmartMoves - Body puzzles for the mind

mary | 28 February, 2008 15:04

This deceptively simple combination of movements and music can change the way we learn and remember. SmartMoves, a DVD, designed for students in grades 3-12, leads students through a series of increasingly complicated body movements that function as a kind of calisthenics for the brain. Forty Body Puzzles at varying levels of difficulty: Simple, Simple Too, Tricky, Challenging, and Formidable, are included in the SmartMoves DVD. A supplemental Teacher's Guide is also included.

Teachers and researchers agree — more and more children develop learning disorders every year. Classrooms are filled with bright children who have trouble learning, shorter attention spans, more impulsive behavior, and decreasing scores in reading and language skills. Developed with these students in mind, SmartMoves provides the following benefits to ALL students:
  • Less stress and anxiety
  • Improvements in ability to focus and working memory
  • Greater ability to integrate multiple concepts
  • Improvements in balance and coordination
  • Gains in academic achievement

TV Technology Reviews Media 100 Version 12

mary | 20 February, 2008 14:08

"Overall, it is quite amazing (and instructive) to see how Media 100 12's development has come along recently, with features being added slowly but steadily, and extremely intelligently. They've patiently updated what was necessary to bring the platform back into the modern marketplace, adding and refining features methodically and leveraging the software assets and capabilities of Boris Graffiti, FX, and RED.

They have done all of this and kept the price of both the hardware-based and software-only packages very reasonable. For those who prefer Media 100 12's clean and uncluttered interface and extensive feature set, this is all very good news. For those who have moved to other editing platforms, it is definitely time to take a peek back into Media 100 and see how it all looks. For those looking to set up a Mac-based suite, a look at the new Media 100 HD is more than worth the effort: Media 100 12 has reconstituted itself as a full featured, efficient, fast, and price and value worthy editing platform."

Office for Mac 2008 rates Very Good - CNET.com

mary | 19 February, 2008 13:16

After a series of delays, Microsoft released Office for Mac 2008 to brick-and-mortar and online stores on January 15, making this the first update in nearly four years.

Office for Mac 2008 includes Word, Excel for spreadsheets, PowerPoint for presentations and Entourage for e-mail and time management. There's no Microsoft Access database application for the Mac, although Filemaker's upcoming release of Bento offers Mac users a new choice.

Unlike Microsoft Office 2007, the interface changes don't look radically foreign next to the 2004 edition. That's good news for anyone who doesn't want to relearn the locations of common functions. The 2007 applications for Windows arrange functions within tabs, while the 2008 Mac software largely clusters functions within the same drop-down menus including File, Edit, and View. (More)

IT Enquirer report compares productivity, creativity, and efficiency in QuarkXPress and InDesign

mary | 18 February, 2008 10:33

IT-Enquirer wrote a 34-pages analysis comparing the most important functionality aimed at productivity, creativity, and efficiency in QuarkXPress 7 and Adobe InDesign CS3. The analysis consists of timing results measured for identical tasks performed in each application and of a qualitative assessment of features that can’t be measured in time.

In particular, we tested tasks and challenges in the following application areas:
- Document, setup, collaboration and design consistency
- Working with layouts
- Printing and output
- Miscellaneous other tasks

The table at the end of this summary lists the results.  We found QuarkXPress 7 to be faster in 79% of the tasks; InDesign CS3 was faster in 21% of the tasks.  However, the degree to which the tasks were faster in either application varied and might not always be relevant to the user. (More)

Final Effects Complete 5 For Adobe After Effects

mary | 15 February, 2008 09:09

Boris FX has taken Final Effects Complete from being the black sheep of the family to a true brother/sister application to BCC - By Kevin McAuliffe

I've worked in Adobe After Effects for about 10 years now, and these days we are very spoiled. I remember days when plug-in packages were few and far between, and we were relying on ICE FX for hardware accelerated renders, as that's what it took to create complex animations, because back then we would jokingly call After Effects "After Dinner," as you would start your render going first thing in the morning, and you could come back after dinner to see IF it was done. Back in those days, there was what I always referred to as the "Holy Grail" of effects packages, and that package was Final Effects from Media 100. Needless to say, with the downswing of Media 100, Final Effects fell into obscurity, until Boris FX jumped in, purchased it from Media 100 and began offering it to the masses once again. The great effects package has been available from Boris FX for a while now, but Boris Blue 2.0, Boris RED 4.2 and Boris Continuum Complete (BCC) have been the products that Boris FX has focused on.....until now. Boris Final Effects is back in a big way, and brings a wider set of effects to Boris FXs' already fantastic arsenal.

Installation
Much like all of Boris' other plug-in packages, Final Effects for After Effects is quick and easy to install, and comes with a two week trial version for you to download and give a try before you buy. After download, you will be up and running with FEC5 in about five minutes. Installation: 10 (out of 10)

What you get and How it Works
I have always loved Final Effects, as it brought a very diverse set of effects to Adobe After Effects that most other packages don't have. Right off the bat, these effects will jump out at you:

    * Mr. Mercury
    * Ball Action
    * Hair
    * Bubbles
    * Flo Motion
    * Rain
    * Snow
    * Sparkle Edges

Califone® Introduces New Technologies in Four Classroom Learning Centers

mary | 14 February, 2008 08:48

Helps students to learn and protects them from bacteria, mold and mildew

San Fernando, CA (February, 2008) — The use of classroom learning centers continues to grow as teachers and students become more comfortable using technology in a group setting. Learning centers allow teachers to differentiate instruction for their students by grouping them with peers with similar abilities, and students have reported they enjoy using the technology at school. As the leader in powered and non-powered learning centers, Califone has recently introduced four learning centers to offer educators the flexibility they need during instruction.

Each new Califone learning center offers educators high-quality technology allowing for multiple students to work together and learn simultaneously. In addition, the learning centers include products that help schools create and manage a healthier environment for their students.

The four learning centers include:
  • The new Califone Sentinal MP3 player/recorder offers dual headphone jacks with an integrated control to limit volume playback in response to recommendations from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to keep volume below 85dB. This is the first portable MP3 learning center and comes with four-person capability, a stereo jackbox and ambient noise-reducing headphones, all packaged in a rugged foam-lined carrying case.
  • The Music Maker™ USB Learning Center offers an MP3-capable media player with a built-in resident memory and both USB and SD card slot access. The six-person center (expandable up to ten students) offers the company's leading Switchable Stereo/Mono headphones with antimicrobial protection built in, which protects against the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.

“Whether helping to create a healthier environment with antimicrobial headphones or by developing more convenient ways for teachers and students to utilize MP3 files, our goal is to make teaching with classroom technology seamless, and in the process facilitate learning,” said Tim Ridgway, VP of Marketing for Califone.
