GenevaLogic is helping schools go “green” by planting a tree for every download of a free 30-day trial of its print-management solutions, Print-Limit and Print-Limit Pro. The company is collaborating with The National Arbor Day Foundation on this initiative, with the goal of planting 1,000 trees this year.
A typical school with 1,000 students spends nearly $20,000 annually on printer paper, toner and maintenance. With the award-winning Print-Limit Pro, educators can conserve resources and save money by easily and efficiently managing printing across large, multi-platform environments.
“Last year was the worst forest fire season on record, burning more than 9.6 million acres of land and creating a need for planting millions of trees in national forests around the country,” said John Rosenow, president, The National Arbor Day Foundation. “It is exciting to partner with GenevaLogic to help schools, colleges and universities preserve our environment while replenishing our forests.”
Print-Limit’s unique features allow schools, colleges, universities and businesses the ability to print when needed, while managing resources, recovering printing expenses and dramatically reducing paper and toner budgets.
“As the use of computers and the Internet has grown in education, so has the amount of paper that students and teachers use every day for printing,” said Kirk Greiner, chief executive officer, GenevaLogic. “Through this collaboration with The National Arbor Day Foundation, we are celebrating the importance of trees by planting one for every school, college or university that takes advantage of the opportunity to see how Print-Limit can help them save the environment and cut costs for their institutions.”
Easily scalable to networks serving more than 20,000 users, Print-Limit Pro features an intuitive Web interface, advanced budgeting and reporting tools, and supports all major operating systems.
For K-12 schools or districts, an unlimited site license starts at $995 for Print-Limit and $1,495 for Print-Limit Pro. Higher education server licenses start at $1,395 for Print-Limit and $1,995 for Print-Limit Pro.

As students log in to Tracking Down Parts of Speech, they encounter a hallway with several rooms. They must then enter a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb room to practice that part of speech in order to be ready to solve a case. After learning about the parts of speech, students choose a case to solve, such as The Mystery of the Creepy Caller. Each case begins with an audio introduction. Then, students practice one or more parts of speech.

Most importantly, SmartMusic 10 and Impact transform the teaching of the core curriculum of bands, orchestras and choirs: the preparation of music for public performances, on which music teachers spend 95% of their class time. In the past, SmartMusic has won awards for fostering student achievement related to solo literature for contests. This activity, however, is peripheral to the fundamental challenges of preparing large ensembles for concerts. SmartMusic 10 and Impact address these large ensemble needs and, for the first time, SmartMusic 10 is central to the primary objectives of school bands, orchestras and choirs.
SmartMusic 10 (Academic Pricing) is available from CCV Software. Included with this is 1 Vocal and 1 Instrumental Mic!

2007 Bessie Award Review of I Spy Mystery software:
I SPY Mystery is the latest release in the popular I SPY series, and capitalizes on the human love for puzzle solving. Advertised for ages 6-10, it will likely captivate parents as well, especially if this software is their first exposure to I SPY Mystery. Combining detailed and lushly colored graphics, animation and sound effects, each puzzle (several per mystery) successfully engages the player who is attempting to find clues and finally reach the solution. There are 13 different mysteries; solution generally requires multiple passes through the puzzles to find additional necessary objects - a nice touch of complexity. Words with several meanings are used creatively to challenge reasoning (e.g., is a bat a flying creature or a baseball tool?). A particularly amusing detail is a puzzle that allows multiple magnifications. For people who are visual and love detail, there's plenty to enjoy. Children who have trouble reading will find the voice-over helpful.

CW Publications, a developer of educational software, is introducing On Your Own Coast-to-Coast, a program to help students learn about the costs of independent living. Some of the skills covered in the simulated three-month period are job hunting, opening a bank account, using credit, paying bills, saving and investing, renting an apartment, activating utilities, and buying insurance. Expenses vary depending on which city a student chooses to settle in, and the simulation is different every time the program is run. A supplemental CD provides teachers with lesson plans and tools for assessment.
