Skullcandy - More than just a cool name. It's cool headphones!

mary | 16 April, 2008 17:00

Skullcandy. Undoubtedly one of the coolest company names I've encountered. Today we'll have a look at Skullcandy's answer to noise canceling headphones, the Skullcrushers. Do these headphones have sophisticated active noise canceling features? No. Do Skullcrushers cater to the executive traveler who despises coach and prefers to sip mixed drinks in first class? No. Do Skullcrushers drown out background noise with a healthy dose of bass rumbling and sheer over-powering volume? YES.

Right away I noticed that these headphones don't fit the standard of previous headsets I've reviewed. The Skullcandy logos emblazoned on the headband and ear cups are a major tip off that these headphones weren't meant for easy listening. And what a logo, by the way - I love skulls.

Extracting the neatly folded
Skullcrushers from its plastic cocoon is easy and demonstrates the relatively small amount of space these full size headphones inhabit. Lightweight and portable, they'd be an ideal headset for those of us who live out of a backpack.

Planet Earth Series receives Parent's Choice Gold Award

mary | 15 April, 2008 16:14

Spring 2008 Television
Ages: 6 & Up
Network: Discovery Channel

Review:

Planet Earth -- Quite simply, it's the standard against which all science/nature documentaries must forever be measured for reasons almost too numerous to mention here. Aimed at no single demographic group so much as the human race itself, "Planet Earth" makes the world around us come to life with a crystal clarity and magnificence never before witnessed. For kids, this multi-parter offers an exciting and fully appropriate view of the natural planet that can't help but stimulate thrall and awe in equal measure. It teaches with great flair while it entertains us effortlessly, presenting the world in a fashion that never feels in the least dull or preachy.  The series consistently illuminates, its grandeur and scope at once mesmerizing and stimulating. As close to a perfect production as we're ever likely to see.

Planet Earth Collection - Education Edition includes teacher's guides and ancillary materials for three targeted grade bands (3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) and connects essential concepts to topics in science, social studies, and the humanities, promoting critical thinking and developing a cross-curricular framework for instruction.

Supplementary programs: Saving Species, Into the Wilderness, and Living Together interweave key arguments from leading environmental commentators about what the future may hold for the world's most threatened plants, animals, and ecosystems.

What can you expect from Camtasia Studio 5.1

Streamlined recorder for swifter capture

The streamlined Camtasia Recorder makes selecting an area to record both fast and easy. There's just one button, no confusing choices. And the clever, new crosshairs makes it child's play to select a region, object, window, or the whole screen.

SmartFocus: freedom to capture now, decide later

Don't worry about the final product, just relax and record your whole screen. Camtasia SmartFocus keeps track of where the action happens during your recording. It automatically creates editable zoom-n-pan points that keep the important parts visible with razor-sharp clarity...even if you produce the video for iPod-sized screens. Fully automatic, very freeing. You've never seen anything like this.

ExpressShow: sleek Flash + simpler sharing

Kiss supporting files goodbye. TechSmith ExpressShow creates a single, beautiful Flash SWF file that can be easily embedded into any Web site, blog, or multimedia project. With a glossy thumbnail image, full-screen playback option, and floating table of contents, this is Flash video that makes you look good. Very good.

Predictable, surgically precise editing

Camtasia Studio 5.1 projects are now edited at 30 frames per second. With more frames to choose from, it’s easier to cut—and keep—precisely what you want, and with greater project stability.

Easy output for bloggers

Camtasia Studio 5.1 lets bloggers record and publish to Screencast.com, and blog about it in minutes. Or using the built-in FTP support, moving videos to your own server can be just as painless.

An experience you can count on

Now with Project Settings and an accurate preview, you can edit your video and see exactly what it will look like before you produce it. And the new AutoSave protects your edits in the event of a crash.
