corefx Three Level given five stars by Children's Technology Review

mary | 15 May, 2007 08:53

corefx Three Level, 5.0 stars, Core Learning Ltd., ages 5-up.

We don't throw around five star ratings. In order to get one, a title needs to be the best in it's category, have quality content, and empower a young mind. That's why we were so thrilled to find corefx Three Level.

Once you start doodling with this simple, powerful graphics program, you simply can't stop. Somebody finally listened to the masses and made a reasonably priced graphics program that any child can be successful with. Take the drawing palate - you get 12 types of art tools, in any color or tip size. You can scribble with wax crayons - the harder you press, the darker the line - or let the watercolors bleed into a silky parchment. Every feature on our creativity wish list was covered: unlimited levels of undo (or redo, if you want to put your mistake back ), a nice collection of commercial free, resizable clip art, and the ability to easily add text to your work. The standard pull-down menus are familiar, often duplicating the icon menus, increasing your chances of making things work.

If you have children (or say, work with a room full of wriggling Kindergartners), you'll appreciate the ability to simplify the menus, with a beginners level. Advanced users will find features even Photoshop doesn't even have... corefx Visual Effectslike a tutorial on how to make animated graphics, and a quick redraw feature that can fast-forward through your project, one stroke at a time. Like a digital Swiss army knife, the program successfully opened a variety of file formats, so you can pull in a JPG straight out of your digital camera, add some text, and create a cover for your family DVD. Trial versions, that will work for 3 days and have print/save features disabled, can be downloaded at a variety of shareware sites. The program runs on newer Windows computers - there is no Mac version. All in all, this is the best consumer level drawing program on the market, for both children and adults.

Wolfram Reinvents Mathematica

A Dramatic New Product Nearly 20 Years after the Original

May 1, 2007--For the second time in under 20 years, Wolfram Research is bringing a revolution to computing. The first was Mathematica 1.0 in 1988. Today's is Mathematica 6--in many respects a completely new product, one with several hundred additional groundbreaking technologies developed over more than a decade at Wolfram Research.

"In compatibility terms, Mathematica 6 is an upgrade. In capability terms, this is a major new product," said Stephen Wolfram, CEO of Wolfram Research. "Mathematica's been reinvented."

Mathematica 6 takes technical computing to a new level: more tightly bound, more natural, and more automated, applicable to a far wider range of areas than ever before. Central to this achievement is "instant interactivity"--taking models, simulations, computations, or just about any concepts and turning them into fully interactive applications, sometimes within seconds. This new way of working drastically improves innovation--the process of transforming ideas into highly optimized results. (More)

Acrobat Connects Users in a Flash

4/27/2007

While Adobe's recent Creative Suite 3 release has been making headlines, intranet professionals should instead take note of the commercial rollout of two versions of Adobe Acrobat Connect, a new Web conferencing tool that uses the power of Adobe Flash to provide instant connections.

Actually, Adobe Acrobat Connect isn't a completely new product. The higher-end version, Acrobat Connect Professional, is a continuation of Macromedia Breeze, which Adobe acquired along with the rest of the company. The less expensive Adobe Acrobat Connect is a simplified version for smaller staffs.

Adobe Acrobat Connect goal is to be completely versatile in both installation and implementation. The software is available in both installed and hosted configurations, and the conferencing software runs on Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Solaris computers. It even runs on Flash-based phones found in Japan and Europe.

The software contains four areas -- training, presenting, meeting, and events -- that should cover all of an organization's conferencing needs. The application can run presentations created with Presenter, Adobe Captivate 2Adobe Flash.
